Volvo XC60 and XC90 Get Long-Range PHEV Powertrains
Volvo is dramatically increasing the electric range of its XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrids with larger batteries, stronger electric motors and major technology upgrades.
Volvo is giving its two most important SUVs a major plug-in hybrid upgrade. The new Volvo XC60 XC90 PHEV models use larger batteries and more powerful electric motors to deliver more than twice the electric range of the existing versions.
For the U.S. market, Volvo says the updated XC60 will offer up to 78 miles of electric range, while the larger XC90 will reach up to 73 miles. The figures are preliminary EPA estimates, but they would make the two SUVs some of the longest-range plug-in hybrids available in America.
The European versions are rated at up to 200 kilometers for the XC60 and 160 kilometers for the XC90 under the WLTP cycle.
A Much Larger Battery Transforms the XC60 and XC90
The biggest change is underneath the floor. Volvo has installed a larger battery pack that increases the amount of energy available for electric driving.
A more powerful electric motor works with the new battery, while the gasoline engine remains available for longer trips when the battery charge is depleted.
Volvo says the new electric range is more than twice that of the existing plug-in hybrid versions, making it possible for many everyday trips to be completed without the gasoline engine running.

The updated Volvo XC60 and XC90 bring dramatically longer electric range to Volvo’s plug-in hybrid SUV lineup.
The strategy also gives Volvo another option for customers who are not ready to move entirely to a battery-electric vehicle.
The company describes these long-range hybrids as part of a transition toward full electrification, alongside its fully electric models.
The XC60 Gets a Major Visual Refresh
The XC60 receives more extensive updates than the XC90 as part of the new PHEV rollout.
The front end has been redesigned with a new grille, bumper, hood and front fenders. Volvo has also introduced new wheels and updated the rear bumper and lighting.
One of the most noticeable changes is the latest version of the brand’s Thor’s Hammer Matrix LED headlights, which give the SUV a sharper appearance.

The refreshed Volvo XC60 gets a redesigned front end, updated lighting and revised exterior details.
Inside, the XC60 receives a new dashboard and door-panel design, along with wood trim and Cardamom ventilated Nappa leather.
The technology has also been upgraded. An 11.2-inch display runs Volvo’s latest interface, while Google Gemini is integrated as the brand’s next-generation voice assistant.
Volvo Adds More Safety Technology to the XC60
The upgraded XC60 also benefits from additional driver-assistance technology.
Volvo has expanded the vehicle’s sensing hardware with cameras, radars and other sensors. The system can provide automatic emergency braking, automatic emergency steering and cyclist alerts designed to warn occupants before a door is opened.
Lane-change assistance and a 360-degree camera with a 3D view are also available.
The goal is to make the XC60 more aware of its surroundings while giving the driver additional information in complex situations.
The XC90 Keeps Its Premium Focus
The XC90 does not receive the same extensive exterior redesign, but it benefits from the new long-range hybrid powertrain and updated technology.
The seven-seat SUV retains its focus on space, comfort and Scandinavian design. Volvo is also making its Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system available as an option.
Google Gemini is included here as well, bringing the same conversational assistant technology found in the updated XC60.

The updated Volvo cabin combines Scandinavian design with a large central touchscreen and the latest Google-powered technology.
The XC90 is therefore positioned as the larger and more spacious alternative, while the XC60 gets the more noticeable design transformation.
Volvo Sees Long-Range PHEVs as a Bridge to EVs
The Volvo XC60 XC90 PHEV strategy gives the company an important middle ground between gasoline-powered vehicles and fully electric SUVs.
With electric ranges approaching or exceeding what many drivers need for daily commuting, the new hybrids can operate like EVs for much of their routine use. At the same time, the gasoline engine remains available for longer journeys without requiring charging stops.
Volvo says this approach is an important part of its path toward a fully electric lineup. The company is also developing the all-electric EX60 for the midsize SUV segment.
Production Starts Later This Year
Orders for the new XC60 and XC90 long-range plug-in hybrids are already opening in selected markets, with production scheduled to begin later in the fall. U.S. customer deliveries are expected to begin in early 2027.
That timing gives Volvo an opportunity to strengthen its plug-in hybrid lineup while demand for electrified vehicles continues to evolve.
Volvo Doubles Down on Long-Range Plug-In Hybrids
The Volvo XC60 XC90 PHEV models represent a significant step forward for the brand’s hybrid strategy. Larger batteries, more powerful electric motors and improved technology allow both SUVs to cover substantially more distance using electricity alone.
The XC60 adds a comprehensive design and safety refresh, while the XC90 gains the new powertrain and additional technology without abandoning its established luxury-focused formula.
For American buyers, the preliminary 78-mile XC60 and 73-mile XC90 electric ranges could make these plug-in hybrids unusually practical for daily driving while retaining the flexibility of a gasoline engine for longer trips.
