Toyota RAV4 Continues Dominance as Fifth-Gen Model Nears Retirement
Even as a new hybrid-only generation approaches, the RAV4 remains America’s top-selling compact SUV.
Despite nearing the end of its production cycle, the fifth-generation Toyota RAV4 continues to outsell rivals across the United States. With September sales reaching 36,599 units, a 16.9% increase from last year, the RAV4 proves that its combination of reliability, versatility, and brand loyalty keeps it ahead of newer competitors. For the year so far, Toyota has moved 358,134 RAV4s, cementing the SUV’s enduring appeal in a highly competitive segment.
Beating the New Generation Rivals
Even against fresher models like the Honda CR-V, which sold 28,549 units in September, the RAV4 maintains a clear lead. Other compact crossovers, such as the Nissan Rogue and Hyundai Tucson, lag significantly with year-to-date sales of 161,824 and 165,239 units respectively. This demonstrates the RAV4’s unmatched presence in the U.S. market, despite being several years old compared to these newer offerings.

Hybrid-Only Future
Toyota’s upcoming sixth-generation RAV4 marks a major shift, moving exclusively to hybrid powertrains. The base model will deliver 226 horsepower, while a performance-oriented GR Sport variant will produce 320 hp with a plug-in hybrid setup. This transition highlights Toyota’s commitment to electrification, aligning with the broader strategy that sees nearly 50% of its sales coming from electrified models.
Brand Loyalty Drives Sales
The sustained success of the fifth-gen RAV4 reflects more than just vehicle capability–it underscores Toyota’s strong brand recognition and customer loyalty. According to a recent J.D. Power study, Toyota ranks as the #1 mass-market brand for repeat buyers, giving it a significant edge in retaining customers even as competitors introduce newer models. The RAV4 benefits from this loyalty, allowing it to remain a top choice among compact SUV shoppers.
Looking Ahead
As the new RAV4 hybrid approaches its launch, the fifth-gen model continues to set the standard in sales and reliability. With hybrid technology at the forefront and Toyota’s reputation as a trusted brand, the next generation is poised to carry the RAV4 legacy further into the electrified era, ensuring it remains a leader in the crowded compact SUV segment for years to come.
