Velvet Motorworks Brings “Backdating” to Range Rovers: Modern L322 with Classic Style
The L322 Range Rover gets a vintage-inspired makeover without losing modern performance.
Velvet Motorworks is shaking up the custom car world with its latest concept: a modernized third-gen L322 Range Rover styled to resemble the iconic Range Rover Classic. Unlike traditional restomods that start with decades-old cars, VM begins with a relatively modern SUV, retaining its facelifted Jaguar-sourced 5.0-liter supercharged V8, while adding custom body panels, LED headlights, and a slimmer front bumper that echoes the original Classic’s rugged charm. The approach delivers vintage aesthetics with contemporary reliability and comfort.
Design That Honors History
The company’s “backdating” process emphasizes key styling cues from the original Range Rover. Squared-off edges, flush bumpers, and LED headlights reminiscent of the Classic’s rounded lamps give the L322 a more angular and purposeful stance. Rugged all-terrain tires and custom wheels complete the look, providing both off-road capability and visual authenticity. The subtle design upgrades highlight how modern SUVs can wear a retro coat without compromising functionality.
Interior and Tech Upgrades
While VM has yet to release detailed images of the interior, the team promises modern electronics, including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and upgraded safety features, bridging the gap between the L322’s classic-inspired styling and today’s connectivity demands. This blend ensures that owners enjoy a comfortable, high-tech cabin alongside classic Range Rover styling, making the SUV suitable for daily driving or off-road adventures.

Performance Remains a Priority
Under the hood, the 5.0-liter supercharged V8 remains the heart of the SUV, paired with a custom active exhaust and reinforced chassis upgrades. While the original BMW-sourced 4.4-liter naturally aspirated V8 is left in the past, this modern Jaguar engine offers superior power, handling, and reliability, ensuring the backdated Range Rover drives as impressively as it looks.
Looking Ahead: Prototype and Production Plans
Although still in the conceptual phase, Velvet Motorworks aims to build the first prototype by Q2 2026, with production expected by Q4. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the L322 next year, this project honors a pivotal chapter in Range Rover history, combining the best of BMW’s engineering heritage with Jaguar’s supercharged performance. Velvet Motorworks’ L322 backdating concept could set a new trend in modern SUVs, proving that classic style and modern performance can coexist beautifully.
