Honda WR-V: The New Compact SUV with Reliable Engine and More Space to Compete in the Hottest Segment
The model was shown at the São Paulo Motor Show and stands out for being larger than the HR-V, offering more interior space and a reliable 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine with chain distribution.
The Honda WR-V was presented at the São Paulo Motor Show, an event marked by the strong presence and high quality of SUVs from Chinese brands. In this context, the WR-V is Honda’s bet to recover market share in the region.
A revealing fact is that pre-sales in Brazil started excellently, with 2,300 units sold in just 10 days.
Dimensions and Space: The Key Factor Against the HR-V
Although the WR-V is a compact SUV, its dimensions are larger than those of the HR-V, which will remain positioned above it in terms of perceived quality and will target a more sophisticated audience.
The WR-V focuses on the family with a more active lifestyle. Its arguments are solid:
- Length: 4,325 mm (+174 mm than the HR-V)
- Wheelbase: 2,650 mm (+84 mm than the HR-V)
- Trunk: 458 liters (compared to the HR-V’s 354 liters)
The exterior design has a style similar to the Honda Pilot, but in a compact format. Additionally, it has a generous ground clearance of 223 millimeters.
Reliable Mechanics and Sophisticated Transmission
Honda emphasized mechanical reliability. Specifically, the brand does not trust oil-bathed distribution belts, citing inconveniences in competitors.
On the contrary, it opted for the proven 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine with i-VTEC variable chain distribution, delivering 121 hp of power and 14.8 kgm of torque.
The transmission is a CVT gearbox that simulates 7 gears (Stepshift) and features the EDDB system, which downshifts to simulate engine braking upon deceleration.

Driving Impressions and Future Strategy
A brief initial contact confirmed that the WR-V is quite spacious in the rear seats and offers a feeling of solidity and good general quality.
Honda has an ambitious strategy for the WR-V:
- Hybrid Version: They are working on the development of a hybrid version.
- Warranty: They are considering increasing the warranty for the version in the country, as it was launched in Brazil with 6 years, double the brand’s usual offer.
- Market Arrival: It will be presented before another heavy rival, the Toyota Yaris Cross.
The final success will depend on the price. If the brand hits the mark on this factor, the WR-V, with its space, safety, and reliability, has the potential to outsell the HR-V and become a regional success.
