The Ford Explorer Electric is going through a key moment in its short commercial life. While much is being said about the strategic agreement between Ford and Renault to develop new electric vehicles on the Ampere platform–with talk of the return of the Fiesta and a new Focus as a mid-size SUV–it is worth remembering that the Explorer 2026 is based on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform, the same architecture used by the ID.4. And now, thanks to a direct €9,000 discount, with no financing required, attention once again turns to one of the most attractive versions in the range.

A historic discount for a highly equipped electric SUV

The offer applies to the Ford Explorer Premium RWD with 286 hp, featuring a 77 kWh net battery and a zero-emissions label, which drops from €54,607 to €45,607 cash. This is an especially competitive figure considering its level of equipment and performance. This version stands out as the most balanced option in the line-up and goes head-to-head with models such as the Volkswagen ID.4, CUPRA Tavascan, Peugeot E-3008 or Renault Scenic E-Tech, now with a far more aggressive price positioning.

In design terms, the Explorer retains a clearly “American” look, with straight lines and a very powerful front end that gives the impression of a larger vehicle, despite measuring 4.47 metres in length. The Premium trim adds matrix LED headlights, 20-inch alloy wheels and black accents that enhance its presence. A 19.3 cm ground clearance and a constant roof height ensure good interior space, while the closed grille improves aerodynamics. That said, details such as the rear drum brakes or the non-flush door handles may divide opinion among purists.

Inside, the Explorer opts for a technological and original layout, featuring a 14.6-inch vertical central screen, which is sliding and hides a storage compartment behind it, acting as a kind of glovebox, alongside a minimalist 5.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Connectivity is comprehensive, with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, navigation with route planning and a natural voice assistant. Rear-seat space is one of its strengths thanks to the flat floor, and the 470-litre boot is more than adequate, even if it is not class-leading.

From a mechanical standpoint, the rear-mounted motor delivers 286 hp and 545 Nm, providing more than sufficient performance: 0–100 km/h in 6.4 seconds and a top speed limited to 180 km/h. On the road, the Explorer showcases Ford’s traditional expertise, offering an excellent balance between daily comfort and sporty handling, very close to that of the CUPRA Tavascan. However, real-world consumption hovers around 19.5 kWh/100 km, which brings realistic range down to around 380 km, well short of the claimed 572 km–especially if the heat pump is not specified, a questionable extra on a model at this level. Even so, the €9,000 discount makes the Ford Explorer Premium one of the smartest electric purchases available today, akin to discovering an unexpected technical advantage–very much in the spirit of modern Formula 1.
