Williams Faces Early Drama in Singapore After Albon’s Practice Fire

By  |

James Vowles confirms rear-end change after brake issue forces Albon out of FP1.

The Singapore Grand Prix weekend began in disastrous fashion for Alex Albon, whose Williams burst into flames just minutes into first practice. The Thai-British driver was forced to stop at the Marina Bay Circuit after smoke and fire emerged from both rear wheels. Mechanics rushed to contain the blaze, and while Albon initially stayed in the cockpit, he quickly jumped out as the flames grew.

Rear-End Replacement Required
Williams later confirmed the fire stemmed from a rear brake hardware problem. Team principal James Vowles explained that the solution would involve replacing the entire rear assembly. Speaking to Sky Sports UK, he noted: “It is basically a rear-end change. We have pre-built rear ends, gearbox, suspension, etcetera, so it is much easier just pulling that off and replacing the whole assembly.”

A Costly Loss of Track Time
Albon was left without a single timed lap, losing more than 50 minutes of crucial running at a circuit where track confidence is built lap by lap. Street circuits like Singapore demand maximum preparation, and missing FP1 leaves the driver playing catch-up for the rest of the weekend.

Sainz Keeps Williams in the Mix
On the other side of the garage, Carlos Sainz delivered a strong session, finishing eighth on medium tires. His laps at least provided valuable data for Williams engineers to analyze ahead of FP2. The contrast highlighted how much Albon missed out on during the opening session.

Focus Shifts to FP2 and Beyond
Despite the setback, Vowles stressed that FP2 under the floodlights will be far more relevant to qualifying and the race. Still, he admitted: “I’d prefer not to miss any track time. This is a street track where you have got to build up into it, so Alex will be on the back foot.” For Albon, recovering confidence quickly will be key if Williams hopes to salvage a strong performance in Singapore.
