Renault Clio RS Williams 2027: the digital recreation that revives the purest hot hatch spirit

By  |

A modern and radical vision of the Clio RS Williams proves that passion for compact combustion-powered sports cars is still very much alive, even if it only exists in digital form.

The Renault Clio RS Williams 2027 is not a real production model, but its impact has been immediate. This digital recreation created by davidbaylisdesign has taken the automotive world by surprise by imagining what the return of one of the most iconic hot hatches in history could look like. In a market where combustion-engined performance cars in the B segment are close to extinction – with rare exceptions such as the Toyota GR Yaris, Volkswagen Polo GTI and MINI John Cooper Works – this concept stands out as a true unicorn.

A non-electrified sports car in the purest tradition

The technical approach behind the Clio RS Williams 2027 is as radical as it is nostalgic. The creator envisions it as a car completely free of any form of electrification, powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 300 hp, paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. It is a configuration aimed squarely at driving purists and, in an era dominated by hybrid systems and batteries, it recalls the raw, mechanical philosophy that once defined Renault Sport.

The concept goes even further by imagining a rear-wheel-drive layout and a kerb weight of just 1,480 kg, figures that would place it in a completely different league from today’s all-electric performance offerings in the segment, such as the Lancia Ypsilon HF or the Peugeot E-208 GTI, both front-wheel drive. This setup would make it an exceptionally engaging compact sports car, delivering a driving experience closer to that of a race car than an uprated city hatchback.

From a design standpoint, the Clio RS Williams 2027 clearly distances itself from the standard Clio 2026. The front end features much larger air intakes, a bespoke bumper and darkened headlights, while the classic deep blue paintwork with bronze wheels pays direct tribute to the original Williams model. Particularly striking is the rear side air intake, an unmistakable nod to the legendary Clio V6 with its engine positioned behind the cabin, complemented by aggressively styled side skirts.

The rear is equally dramatic, with a fixed rear wing, a pronounced diffuser and two large circular exhaust outlets, reinforcing its serious, function-led performance image. However, reality paints a different picture: Renault has no plans to develop a high-performance combustion-powered Clio, due to stringent emissions regulations and the fact that Renault Sport ceased road-car operations some time ago. As a result, all that remains is the cherished memory of the original Clio Williams, powered by a 2.0-litre engine producing 160 hp (150 hp with a catalytic converter), a model that exceeded all expectations – from an initial plan of 4,500 units to more than 12,000 produced – achieving a top speed of 216 km/h and sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.9 seconds, a legend that now lives on, albeit digitally.
