Ford Everest Spotted in the US Sparks Rumors of a Ranger-Based SUV

By  |

Could the rugged global SUV finally make its way to American roads?

A Ford Everest prototype was recently spotted testing in Dillon, Colorado, carrying manufacturer plates and outfitted with development equipment. The SUV’s off-road bumpers, black alloy wheels, and leather-trimmed Platinum interior signal it’s a high-spec test vehicle, not a private import. With its laptop docking station and additional instrumentation inside, the Everest’s presence in the US has sparked speculation about a potential American debut.

What Is the Everest?
Known as the Endeavour in India, the Everest is a ladder-frame SUV based on the global Ranger pickup, featuring a shorter wheelbase and a three-row cabin layout. First launched in 2003, the current generation arrived in 2022 and is sold across Southeast Asia, Oceania, South Africa, South America, and the Middle East. Depending on the market, it can be equipped with diesel or petrol engines, rear- or four-wheel drive, and trim levels ranging from rugged off-road variants to luxury-focused editions.

High-Altitude Testing in Colorado
Colorado has long served as a global proving ground for automakers, with its high elevation and extreme weather conditions ideal for durability and emissions testing. Sightings of Everest prototypes along Interstate 70 and in Michigan have fueled curiosity, although it appears Ford’s testing is primarily part of its global development program, rather than confirmation of a US launch.

Could Everest Rival the Toyota 4Runner?
The Everest theoretically fits the mid-size, ladder-frame SUV niche in the US, positioning it as a potential competitor to the Toyota 4Runner. However, Ford already offers the four-door Bronco, built on a similar architecture and designed for American buyers. Introducing the Everest would risk cannibalizing sales and require significant modifications to meet US safety and emissions standards, as well as navigating import tariffs for vehicles built in Thailand.

Why the Everest May Stay Overseas
While the Everest generates excitement among enthusiasts, practical considerations make a US release unlikely. Ford’s current focus remains on the Bronco and Ranger models built in America, avoiding the logistical and regulatory hurdles of importing a Thailand-built SUV. Still, the Everest’s recent sightings have reignited conversation about Ford’s global SUV portfolio and what could eventually cross over to American roads.
