Diesel Reinvented: New Hybrid Diesel Models (Eco and Zero) You Can Buy in 2026
Automakers are betting on electrified diesel for 2026, offering a combination of efficiency and access to the coveted Eco and Zero labels. This strategy focuses on Mild Hybrid (MHEV) and diesel Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) technology.
Audi: The Electrification of TDI Across the Range
Audi has been implementing mild hybrid technology in its four- and six-cylinder turbodiesel engines for several years. Between late 2025 and early 2026, it will begin delivering the new Audi A6 and Audi A6 Avant. These models will feature the electrified 2.0 TDI engine with 204 HP.
In addition, two large Audi SUVs will debut in 2026. Both could incorporate mild hybrid diesel engines. The Audi Q7 might receive a boosted 3.0 V6 TDI turbodiesel engine. This powertrain would reach nearly 300 HP and comply with Euro 7 regulations. Finally, the enormous Audi Q9, over 5 meters long, would also be equipped with electrified diesel engines.
BMW: Diesel Power with Eco Label
BMW opts for mild hybridization in almost all its diesel-powered models. The new BMW 3 Series is the most interesting model with this engine for 2026. The sedan will be based on the CLAR platform. Aesthetically, it will be similar to the electric i3.
However, it will be equipped with mild hybrid diesel engines of four and six inline cylinders. These powertrains will exceed 300 HP. The fifth generation of the BMW X5 will also be entirely new in 2026. Consequently, in principle, it will retain the six-cylinder diesel engine with mild hybridization. The BMW 7 Series will receive a restyling in 2026. The updated BMW X1 and X2 will also be seen in 2026. Both will feature the 2-liter four-cylinder diesel engine with mild hybridization.
Commitments from Kia, Land Rover, and Mazda
Kia supports the cause of electrified diesel. The recent Sportage 2026 continues to offer the 1.6 CRDi MHEV diesel mechanics. This version has 136 HP. It is front-wheel drive and offers a manual gearbox or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
The Land Rover Defender has received a slight update. Most deliveries are expected for 2026. Furthermore, the 3-liter six-cylinder mild hybrid diesel engine remains in the lineup. This yields between 250 and 350 HP. The updates to the Mazda CX-60 and CX-80 SUVs focus on equipment. They also update the mild hybrid diesel engine. This is now compatible with HVO 100 biodiesel. The 6-cylinder e-Skyactiv D engine retains the 200 and 254 HP outputs.

Mercedes-Benz and Toyota: Unique Solutions
Mercedes-Benz is the only manufacturer with a diesel plug-in hybrid (PHEV). This solution is very attractive in range and consumption. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is expected to be updated in 2026. It will retain the 2-liter mild hybrid diesel engine, with up to 265 HP. The same turbodiesel engine might be available in a PHEV version with over 300 HP.
Other restylings for 2026 include the Mercedes-Benz GLE and GLE Coupé SUVs. They will continue with mild hybrid and PHEV diesel engines. The enormous Mercedes-Benz GLS and the S-Class will also not give up on diesel. They will receive an update in 2026. Finally, Toyota will continue to commercialize its Land Cruiser. It will include the 48V hybrid version. This will feature a 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine producing 204 HP, plus a small additional electric boost.
