McLaren Manual Gearbox Could Return With the P50

It remains unclear whether the car will feature a traditional manual transmission or a simulated system similar to Ferrari’s latest gated-shifter setup.

Volkswagen Tukan Debuts as a New Small Pickup for Brazil

Volkswagen has revealed the new Tukan as the Saveiro’s successor, bringing a larger body, two cab configurations, and potential turbocharged and hybrid powertrains.

Volkswagen has officially revealed the Tukan, a new small pickup developed for the Brazilian market and positioned as the successor to the long-running Saveiro.

Shown without camouflage at the Barretos Rodeo Festival in São Paulo state, the new pickup is available in single-cab and double-cab configurations and is scheduled to go on sale in early 2027.

The Tukan will be built in São José dos Pinhais, Paraná, with the Fiat Strada identified as its primary competitor.

A larger pickup replaces the Saveiro

The new Tukan will be larger than the model it replaces, moving Volkswagen closer to the segment occupied by pickups such as the Chevrolet Montana.

The single-cab version will focus more heavily on commercial buyers and cargo hauling, while the double-cab model is expected to emphasize comfort and equipment for customers using the truck as both a work and personal vehicle.

The Volkswagen Tukan replaces the Saveiro with a larger body and both single-cab and double-cab configurations.

Volkswagen has not yet released the Tukan’s complete dimensions, payload capacity, or final trim structure.

The design follows the brand’s latest styling direction, with slim headlights connected by a horizontal light strip and more rugged-looking bumpers.

At the rear, the taillights feature an E-shaped lighting signature linked by a horizontal bar across the tailgate.

Turbo and hybrid engines could be available

Volkswagen is keeping the Tukan’s final engine lineup under wraps, but several powertrain options are expected.

Entry-level versions could use the familiar 1.6-liter naturally aspirated MSI engine with a manual transmission, targeting fleet operators and small businesses.

The Tukan could offer naturally aspirated, turbocharged, and mild-hybrid powertrains depending on the trim.

Mid-range models are expected to use the 1.0-liter TSI flex-fuel engine, potentially paired with a six-speed automatic or Volkswagen’s newer eight-speed automatic transmission.

At the top of the lineup, the Tukan could introduce Volkswagen’s 1.5-liter TSI Evo2 with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system in Brazil.

These powertrain details have not yet been fully confirmed by Volkswagen.

MQB-based platform with leaf-spring rear suspension

The Tukan’s architecture will be derived from Volkswagen’s MQB platform, which is already used by models including the Polo, Nivus, Tera, and T-Cross.

The rear suspension takes a different approach.

The Tukan uses an MQB-derived architecture with a solid rear axle and leaf springs designed for cargo use.

Volkswagen has opted for a solid rear axle with leaf springs, a configuration commonly used in commercial pickups and also found on the Fiat Strada.

The setup is intended to improve durability and cargo-hauling capability while giving the Tukan a more work-oriented character.

The Saveiro’s long run is coming to an end

The Tukan will also mark the end of the Volkswagen Saveiro, which has been in production since 1982.

The pickup is the last surviving member of the original Gol family and has remained on sale for more than four decades.

The Saveiro will leave production after more than four decades as Volkswagen prepares to replace it with the Tukan.

Production of the Saveiro is expected to end during the final quarter of 2026.

The current model is offered in Robust, Trendline, and Extreme trims, with single- and double-cab bodies. Its powertrain lineup remains limited to a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter engine and manual transmission.

The Tukan will introduce significantly more modern powertrain choices.

Volkswagen targets Brazil’s best-selling pickup

The Tukan has a clear target: the Fiat Strada, which has dominated Brazil’s pickup market since 2021.

Volkswagen plans to compete with the Strada across both commercial and lifestyle-oriented versions.

Turbocharged engines, automatic transmissions, and potential electrification could give the Tukan a broader range of capabilities than the outgoing Saveiro.

Pricing and detailed equipment will be announced closer to the pickup’s early-2027 launch.

For now, the Volkswagen Tukan represents a major change for the brand’s small-pickup strategy in Brazil, replacing a 40-year-old nameplate with a larger, more modern truck designed to compete directly with one of the country’s best-selling vehicles.

Tesla Cybercab Gets September 3 Austin Launch Date

Tesla will officially launch its steering-wheel-free Cybercab in Austin on September 3, adding the two-seat robotaxi to an existing autonomous fleet.

Tesla has officially set September 3, 2026 as the launch date for the Cybercab in Austin, Texas.

The two-seat autonomous vehicle has no steering wheel or pedals and is designed specifically for Tesla’s robotaxi service. The launch will initially be limited to selected guests rather than opening the vehicle to everyone.

Tesla prepares a controlled Cybercab launch

The September 3 event will be a tightly controlled launch, with Tesla sending invitations to selected riders and guests.

Some invitees previously completed Robotaxi trips between August 17 and 23, while others received exclusive-access invitations directly from Tesla.

Tesla will officially launch the Cybercab in Austin on September 3, 2026.

Guests must be at least 21 years old and will need to present identification at the event.

That suggests Tesla is treating the September launch as a curated demonstration rather than a large public rollout.

The company already operates autonomous Model Y Robotaxis in limited areas of Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa, meaning the Cybercab will be joining an existing service rather than creating Tesla’s robotaxi network from scratch.

Two seats, no steering wheel, no pedals

The Cybercab is fundamentally different from Tesla’s other vehicles.

The compact robotaxi has two seats and eliminates the traditional controls that would allow a human driver to take over.

The Cybercab uses a two-seat cabin with no steering wheel or conventional pedals.

That means every mile depends entirely on Tesla’s autonomous-driving software.

The vehicle uses Tesla’s AI4 computer platform for its Full Self-Driving system. Future AI4.5 and AI5 hardware is already part of Tesla’s longer-term roadmap, but the initial Cybercab production vehicles in Austin will use AI4.

The absence of manual controls also creates additional regulatory and safety considerations because passengers cannot simply take control if something goes wrong.

Cybercab enters an existing robotaxi network

Tesla first demonstrated the Cybercab concept publicly in October 2024, when attendees were able to experience autonomous rides on a closed course in California.

Since then, the company has continued testing the production vehicle.

Tesla has been testing Cybercab ahead of its Austin launch, including employee rides and additional autonomous-road testing.

Employee rides in Cybercab began in July 2026 as Tesla moved closer to commercial deployment.

The September 3 launch should therefore be viewed as another step in a gradual rollout rather than an immediate mass-market launch.

Tesla still faces questions surrounding regulations, safety validation, and how quickly customers will actually gain access to the new vehicle.

For now, the Tesla Cybercab is set to make its formal Austin debut on September 3. The launch will provide Tesla with another opportunity to demonstrate its driverless technology while bringing a purpose-built, steering-wheel-free robotaxi into its growing autonomous fleet.

2027 Mitsubishi Pajero Returns With Body-on-Frame Platform

Regional reports have suggested that S-AWC could be paired with Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4WD-II system.

That combination could potentially provide multiple drive configurations and low-range capability, although Mitsubishi has not officially confirmed the pairing yet.

A more extreme Pajero Ralliart version has also been rumored, which would push the SUV further toward serious off-road competition.

Hybrid power remains the big unknown

Mitsubishi has hinted at electrified versions of the new Pajero, but the company has not yet disclosed the battery size, electric range, or specific engine combinations.

A key question is whether the SUV will use a hybrid system derived from the hardware and architecture shared with the Triton.
