For the launch of five 2013 Audi vehicles in Colorado this past June, journalists received iPads before the event. This wasn’t a gift for the sake of turning our heads. The iPads were loaded with the visual presentation and the press kits for the Audi A4, S4, A5, S5 and allroad.

Considering that these days communication is all about technology, this was in par with Audi’s progressive initiative. As one of the team members explained to me, information for future launches could be sent to our iPads instead of loading us down with huge press kits or miniature thumb drives.

These days, it’s almost a blemish on an auto company if they don’t incorporate iPad or iPhone technology into their cars. For example, the Mercedes-Benz M-Class offers a backseat iPad dock that rotates 90 degrees and tilts for optimal screen viewing. The 2013 Cadillac XTS is giving away an iPad with each purchase that explains the technology of their CUE interactive system. Most new cars can have seamless iPhone interaction.

We were interested to know about Audi’s “Story of Progress†(the name of the event), so we asked Loren Angelo, General Manager of Marketing Strategies to elaborate.

What’s Audi’s connection with the iPad?

“Advanced technology has always been at the heart of the Audi DNA. As a tech-forward brand, we’re constantly in pursuit of new, more efficient solutions both on and off the road. We know that potential buyers own smartphones, and as such, we’re taking advantage of the opportunity to reach those potential customers where they are by making mobile a priority, ensuring that Web sites are compatible with mobile, designing apps and incorporating ads within existing platforms. We have integrated iPads into our showrooms and industry events and have several interactive iPad applications – available for download in the iTunes App Store – designed to help customers easily find rich content in a convenient and entertaining way. For us, the iPad is the most relevant and fresh way to deliver information currently.â€

Any new marketing initiatives for 2012/2013?

(Audi has offered up some remarkable advertising initiatives in the last couple of years. For the 2011 Super Bowl, Audi featured the A8 sedan in the spot, ‘Release the Hounds,’ which followed two inmates as they attempted to break out of a luxury prison with background music by sax man Kenny G.)

“We just launched a new ad campaign, A4 ‘Chirp.’ With the momentum of the Audi brand and the selection by A4 owners as top in initial quality, it’s a testament to the success of the brand and a reference to the all new lineup of B-segment vehicles coming to the market. With the introduction of the new RS 5 and S6, S7 and S8 coming in these next few weeks, Audi will be establishing a strong marketing campaign to announce the progressive performance solutions that are engineered for the driver. The new S Models will be a brand priority for the remainder of 2012 and 2013. Be sure to be on the lookout for new marketing initiatives.â€

Any interesting partnerships?

Angelo noted that Audi recently announced their purchase of Ducati.

Ducati brings some charisma and pizzazz to the company. North America is Ducati’s largest market. At the beginning of July 2012, Ducati set a new record for North American sales, with 10,094 units sold over the past 12 months and reported a 26-percent Q2 gain over the same period in 2011.

Any styling changes that you think will appeal to a younger audience?

“For 2013, Audi has refreshed its B Segment models, including the A4/S4, A5/S5 and allroad. Several changes to the exteriors and interiors give the vehicles a more sporty, aggressive and youthful look (for a younger and more affluent buyer). These changes include: sharper lines along the sides and down the hoods, wider front air intakes and shoulder lines, more prominent grilles and wheels and reshaped LED headlights that glow with more shine and intensity.â€

The 2013 Audi has updated interior appointments using stainless steel mesh inlays with Piano Black finishes, new touches of chrome, and revised seat and steering wheel shapes. And a trend that’s way overdue: Audi cabins are merging color concepts. For example, Audi is pairing a beige seat with a brown dash and employing more luxurious appointments like layered oak finishes. Audi Connect, the third infotainment update, has direct access to a Google map database and viewing abilities that make it possible to navigate around the vehicle and down side streets.

The company is planning strategies for growth by keeping a high loyalty and premium image with consistent marketing, expanding its portfolio, stabalizing incentives and focusing on customer experience.

Audi’s strategy is working. In a recent J.D. Power and Associates APEAL study, the 2012 Audi A8 received the award for the Most Appealing Larger Premium Car and the overall best performing model. The 2012 Audi A6 received the Most Appealing Midsize Premium Car.

With the allroad returning for the first time since 2005, Audi is going to be gaining some new footage in the crossover market. I won’t say to stay tuned. Audi knows how to keep its audience involved. However, I will say this: watch where Audi goes next.

Audi Delays Next F1 Power Unit Upgrade Until 2027

Published

on

Audi has confirmed that its Formula 1 power unit will not receive another major upgrade during the remainder of the 2026 season as the manufacturer shifts its focus toward long-term development for 2027.

Audi has confirmed that its Audi F1 power unit will not receive another major hardware upgrade before the end of the 2026 Formula 1 season. Instead, the manufacturer will focus its resources on a larger development package planned for 2027.

Moreover, the decision reflects Audi’s long-term strategy as it balances performance gains with Formula 1’s financial regulations.

Budget Limits Shape Audi’s Development Strategy

Although Audi introduced an upgraded power unit package at the Spanish Grand Prix, the team has decided not to develop another major hardware update this season.

According to Audi team principal Allan McNish, the decision is driven by the championship’s cost cap. Every Formula 1 team must carefully balance spending between chassis development and power unit improvements while ensuring sufficient resources remain for future projects.

As a result, Audi believes investing in a larger upgrade for 2027 offers a better return than introducing another costly package during the current campaign.

Audi is focusing its Formula 1 power unit development on a major upgrade planned for 2027.

Barcelona Upgrade Delivered Noticeable Progress

The Audi F1 power unit received its first significant update during the Spanish Grand Prix.

Rather than increasing outright performance, the package focused on improving driveability. According to Nico Hülkenberg, the revised power unit delivered smoother power delivery and better throttle response, addressing one of the biggest weaknesses of Audi’s package earlier in the season.

Furthermore, Audi’s recent progress has been reflected in its results. The team has scored points in each of the last three races, allowing it to move ahead of Williams in the Constructors’ Championship.

Audi’s Barcelona upgrade improved driveability and helped the team make consistent progress.

Why Driveability Matters in Formula 1

Hülkenberg explained that improving a power unit involves much more than increasing horsepower.

The way torque is delivered, throttle response and gearshift quality all influence how drivers control the car at the limit. Additionally, smoother power delivery makes it easier to accelerate out of corners while maintaining balance and maximizing grip.

Consequently, even subtle improvements can translate into valuable lap time during a Formula 1 race.

Audi Is Already Looking Toward 2027

Audi has made it clear that its next major Audi F1 power unit upgrade will focus on new hardware scheduled for the 2027 season.

Meanwhile, the team will continue developing its chassis throughout the remainder of 2026 while extracting additional performance from its existing engine package through setup optimization and software refinements. Therefore, fans should not expect another significant hardware change before next year.

Audi will continue chassis development while preparing its next major power unit upgrade for 2027.

Long-Term Planning Takes Priority

Audi’s decision highlights the reality of modern Formula 1 development under strict financial regulations.

Overall, by postponing major power unit upgrades until 2027, the manufacturer aims to maximize its long-term competitiveness instead of pursuing short-term gains during the remainder of the 2026 season.

BMW Reportedly Cancels Rugged X5-Based SUV Project

Published

on

BMW has reportedly abandoned plans for a rugged, X5-based luxury SUV that was expected to compete with off-road icons like the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Land Rover Range Rover.

The rumored BMW X5 off-road SUV may never reach production. According to recent reports, BMW has reportedly canceled development of a new luxury off-roader that would have expanded the brand’s SUV lineup with greater off-road capability.

Moreover, the project was expected to target buyers looking for a premium alternative to the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Land Rover Range Rover.

A Rugged SUV Based on the Next-Generation X5

The vehicle was reportedly developed under the internal G74 project name.

It would have shared its platform with the next-generation BMW X5 while featuring a more rugged design and improved off-road capability. Additionally, reports suggested the SUV would have offered three rows of seating and retained a gasoline-powered engine instead of switching to a fully electric powertrain.

Production was reportedly planned for the second half of 2029.

The canceled BMW project was expected to share its platform with the next-generation BMW X5.

BMW Wanted to Enter the Luxury Off-Road Segment

The BMW X5 off-road SUV was reportedly created to compete in the growing luxury off-road market.

Its primary rivals would have included the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and the Land Rover Range Rover, two of the segment’s best-known models. Furthermore, reports indicate BMW engineers drew inspiration from internal evaluations of the Rivian R1T, whose capabilities demonstrated growing customer interest in premium adventure vehicles.

As a result, BMW appeared ready to introduce one of its most capable SUVs ever.

BMW reportedly envisioned the model as a premium competitor to established luxury off-road SUVs.

Why the Project Was Reportedly Abandoned

Despite early enthusiasm, BMW is now said to have changed direction.

According to industry reports, executives concluded that the luxury off-road SUV segment is too small to justify the investment required for an all-new model. Consequently, the company reportedly decided to cancel the project before it entered production.

BMW has not officially confirmed that the G74 program existed, and company representatives have declined to comment on the reports.

BMW Continues Investing in Its Core SUV Portfolio

Although the BMW X5 off-road SUV may never become reality, BMW continues expanding its existing SUV lineup.

The next-generation X5 remains a key part of the company’s future strategy, while BMW also continues investing in electrification and high-performance M models. Therefore, resources originally linked to the canceled off-road project could now support other future vehicle programs.

BMW has not officially confirmed reports that the off-road SUV project has been canceled.

BMW X5 Off-Road SUV Would Have Been a Unique Addition

The BMW X5 off-road SUV had the potential to introduce a completely different character to BMW’s utility vehicle lineup.

Overall, if the reports are accurate, the company has decided to prioritize larger-volume projects rather than entering a niche market already dominated by established luxury off-road competitors.
