20 Years Ago, Alpina Dreamed of a Unique MINI: The Exclusive Cooper S ‘Lux’ That Never Made It to Production

A forgotten prototype that united two worlds: the British sportiness of MINI and Alpina’s handcrafted luxury. This is the story of how the MINI Cooper S ‘Lux’ was born as a true collector’s gem.

Two decades ago, Alpina, the Bavarian firm famous for turning BMWs into true collector’s items, came close to creating a very special MINI. In 2005, based on the MINI Cooper S R53, the brand developed a concept car called the Cooper S ‘Lux’. The goal was clear: to blend the sporty spirit of the British icon with Alpina’s trademark handcrafted elegance, creating something the compact car segment had never seen before.

An Elegant Design with a Sporty Soul
The Lux wasn’t designed to be faster than the standard Cooper S but to be more refined and exclusive. It retained the 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with 170 hp and a top speed of 222 km/h, yet its charm lay in the details. ALPINA DYNAMIC alloy wheels, blue-and-silver paintwork, and grey-tinted taillights gave it a distinctive personality. Every panel and trim piece was carefully finished to exude that unmistakable Alpina craftsmanship.

Luxury Inside, the Alpina Way
If the exterior was elegant, the interior was pure indulgence. The cabin was fully trimmed in two-tone blue and grey Alcantara, with blue-lacquered plastic inserts adding to the exclusivity. From the dashboard to the door panels and seats, every surface was meticulously finished by hand. The result was a MINI that felt more like a boutique concept car than a small hot hatch — a true expression of luxury in a compact form.

A One-Off That Showed an Untraveled Path
The Cooper S ‘Lux’ remained a one-off creation, never entering production. For years it stayed hidden, until recently when it was showcased during Alpina’s 60th anniversary gathering in Penzing. This unique car reminded enthusiasts what could have been if MINI and Alpina had officially joined forces — a dream blend of compact sportiness and handcrafted luxury that still captivates fans today.

Alpina’s Future: A New Era Under BMW’s Wing
Starting in 2026, Alpina will officially become part of the BMW Group, closing the chapter on its independence. Yet, the Bovensiepen family is already preparing a new venture under its own brand. Their first model, the Zagato powered by BMW M4 technology, promises to carry on that same spirit of exclusivity and precision that once gave life to masterpieces like the MINI Cooper S ‘Lux’.
