The New Santana 400: The Return of the Spanish Pick-Up with Diesel Power and Plug-In Hybrid Version

By  |

The historic Andalusian brand makes a strong comeback with a robust, modern pick-up featuring cutting-edge technology. It will be available as a 429 hp PHEV and a 190 hp diesel.

Santana Motors, the legendary Andalusian manufacturer that defined an era in off-road vehicles, is back with a new pick-up developed alongside Zhengzhou Nissan — the Santana 400. Based on the Nissan Frontier Pro, the model has now been officially unveiled, confirming what many enthusiasts were hoping for: both plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and diesel versions will be offered.

The PHEV variant promises up to 120 km (75 miles) of electric range, earning it the Zero Emissions badge from the Spanish DGT. Combined output reaches an impressive 429 hp and 800 Nm of torque, thanks to the pairing of a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor powered by a 32 kWh battery that supports DC fast charging. Together, they deliver over 1,000 km (620 miles) of total range, an outstanding figure in the pick-up segment.

A Diesel Workhorse with Muscle and Professional Focus

For more traditional buyers, Santana will offer the 400D, powered by a 2.3-litre diesel engine producing 190 hp and 500 Nm of torque. Customers can choose between a manual or automatic transmission, with the option of an electronic rear differential lock — a feature that underlines its off-road and heavy-duty credentials. The model comes in double-cab configuration with seating for five and boasts over 800 kg of payload capacity and 3,200 kg of towing capability. Its 14.6-inch central touchscreen, customisable digital instrument cluster, and up to 28 electronic driver aids (ADAS) place it among the most technologically advanced pick-ups in its class.

True Off-Road Dimensions and Cutting-Edge Technology

Measuring 5.49 metres long, 1.96 metres wide, and 1.95 metres high, the Santana 400 has a commanding presence. A 24 cm ground clearance and 800 mm wading depth ensure outstanding off-road performance, complemented by approach and departure angles of 31º and 26º, respectively. It also features a 540° surround-view camera that even allows drivers to see underneath the vehicle — a rare innovation in this category.

Built in Linares, Aiming for International Expansion

The Santana 400 will be produced in Linares (Jaén, Spain), reviving the brand’s historic connection with the Spanish automotive industry. Over 30 official dealerships across Spain, Portugal, Italy, Andorra, and Gibraltar will sell the model initially, with more to be added as sales grow. With this new project, Santana Motors proves its comeback is not a mere exercise in nostalgia, but a bold step toward the future, where classic toughness meets electrification and advanced technology. The year 2026 will mark the definitive return of a Spanish automotive legend to the international stage.
