Land Rover Prepares Its “Baby Defender”: Compact, Electric, and Coming in 2027

By  |

The new Defender Sport promises to combine the off-road essence of the iconic SUV with a more urban size and hybrid and electric technology.

A Miniature Defender

Land Rover is developing a smaller version of the Defender, tentatively named Defender Sport, set to hit the market between 2026 and 2027. The first test units have already been spotted, confirming that the project is real. This compact SUV will maintain the 4×4 versatility of the standard Defender, but in reduced dimensions: approximately 4.6 meters long, 2 meters wide, and under 1.8 meters tall, placing it between segments C and D. It will be a direct competitor to the upcoming Mercedes-Benz “Baby G”.

Updated and Aerodynamic Design

While the Defender Sport will retain its square silhouette and high beltline, the front will be updated with a slimmer grille and softer bumpers, optimizing aerodynamics and energy efficiency. This design will blend robust off-road aesthetics with modern styling, preserving the rugged character that defines the brand.

Electric Platform and PHEV Options

The model could be built on Jaguar Land Rover’s new EMA platform, compatible with 800-volt electric systems and charging up to 350 kW. This opens the door for fully electric variants, although plug-in hybrid options are also likely, following the group’s strategy to offer gradual and accessible electrification solutions.

Strategy and Legacy

The Defender Sport could replace the Discovery Sport, becoming the indirect successor to the Freelander 2, one of Land Rover’s most popular SUVs. Using the Defender name would strengthen its commercial appeal and allow the brand to capitalize on the global success of the range, which exceeded 114,000 units sold in 2024.

Launch and Expectations

The official debut could take place in late 2026, with dealership arrivals in 2027. If plans are confirmed, the Defender Sport will become the entry point to the Defender family, combining heritage, compact design, and hybrid and electric technologies, solidifying Land Rover as a leader in advanced off-road mobility.
