Mercedes-Benz Dresses the Unimog in Luxury: the Most Extreme Off-Roader Celebrates 80 Years with 300 HP and a Premium Soul
The legendary Unimog reinvents itself on its 80th anniversary with a luxury version that combines its iconic off-road capability with more power, technology, and a high-end SUV-style interior.

Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks marks eight decades of the Unimog with a design exercise that is as surprising as it is true to its heritage. Together with Hellgeth Engineering, the German brand presents a luxury Unimog concept that proves the world’s most capable industrial vehicle can perform just as convincingly on rocks, mud, or snow–and stop without hesitation in front of a five-star hotel. This is not merely a showpiece, but a clear statement of intent for the icon’s future.
A true Unimog, now with more muscle and refinement

Beneath the SUV-inspired bodywork and matte grey finish lies the familiar backbone of the Unimog U 4023: portal axles, a torsion-resistant frame, selectable all-wheel drive, and differential locks on both axles. The major upgrade is under the bonnet, where the four-cylinder engine is replaced by the six-cylinder Mercedes-Benz OM 936 delivering 220 kW (300 hp). This enhancement provides greater tractive force and finer transmission tuning–advantages any specialist in extreme driving will immediately appreciate.
On the technology front, this show car introduces features rarely seen in the heavy-duty workhorse segment. The MirrorCam system replaces traditional mirrors with cameras and digital displays, improving visibility both off-road and in urban environments. Added to this are 20-inch beadlock aluminium wheels and a full LED lighting package that enhances both presence and night-time functionality.
The most radical transformation becomes clear once inside. The double cab, seating up to four occupants, has been reimagined with high-quality leather, contrast stitching, ambient LED lighting, and leather floor mats, raising comfort to true premium SUV levels. The result is a deliberate contrast: the same vehicle capable of crossing deserts or quarries, now wrapped in a refined environment that reduces vibrations and fatigue without compromising durability.
Far from being mere marketing, Mercedes-Benz will subject this luxury Unimog to real-world testing with a customer next year to gather usage and reliability data. The message is unmistakable: luxury does not replace capability–it enhances it. The Unimog thus reaffirms its essence: reaching places where others turn back, working harder than anyone else, and now doing so with extra power reserves and an interior that also appeals to the most demanding clients.
