The dream of owning a car capable of exceeding 200 mph (320 km/h) has become more accessible than ever. Following an exhaustive search, the 2013-2014 Ford Shelby GT500 emerges as the most affordable vehicle to enter this elite club. This model was the first Mustang to break the 200 mph barrier.

For decades, reaching a speed of 200 mph (320 km/h) in a production car seemed like a fantasy. Today, this speed is more accessible thanks to used options. However, achieving this feat remains a brutal fight against physics. Success requires a myriad of engineering factors to work perfectly. It is not just about horsepower.

Aerodynamic Drag becomes the biggest enemy. Drag increases exponentially as you inch closer to 200 mph. For this reason, many cars top out at 180–190 mph. They lack that extra power to overcome the car’s brutal drag. Gearing represents another hard mechanical limit. Most sports cars use short final-drive ratios for low-speed acceleration. A 200 mph car needs a setup that compromises between acceleration and top speed.

Finally, Thermal Management is critical. Keeping the drivetrain cool is paramount at speeds approaching 200 mph. Coolant, oil, and transmission temperatures have to be controlled. If they are not controlled, your run will end well before 200 mph. Of course, the right Tires are paramount. Not many tires out there are actually certified to handle 200 mph speeds.

The 2013-2014 Ford Shelby GT500 stands as the affordable high-speed hero. It is the crowning speed achievement of the live-axle Mustang. This vehicle has an average used price of a mere $54,944 dollars. This positions it below the price of many new sports sedans. The original retail price for the 2013 GT500 coupe was $54,995. Surprisingly, it has not appreciated much, leaving it as a performance bargain in 2025.

Engineering Designed for Extreme Speed

The 2013-2014 Shelby GT500 did not just hit 200 mph by chance. It was purpose-built for that mission. This all started with its engine, Ford’s trusted Modular V8. The 5.8-liter “Trinity” V8 features an aluminum block with an increased bore and a revised compression ratio of 9.0:1. The engine produced a whopping 662 horsepower alongside 631 lb-ft of torque. A 2.3-liter Eaton TVS 2300 supercharger sat on top.

The aero was revised for high speed. A new front fascia, splitter, and underbody management were added. This produced 33% more downforce at 160 mph (257 km/h). The base model includes six-piston front Brembo brakes and Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar G:2 tires. Finally, two packages increased performance further. The Performance Package added adjustable Bilstein dampers. The Track Package included additional cooling for the engine oil, rear differential, and transmission.
