2025 Chevy Colorado Simplifies Engines—And Gains More Power

By  |

Chevrolet streamlines the Colorado lineup, keeping only the most capable turbocharged engine.

For 2025, the Chevrolet Colorado is dropping its base engine, leaving only the 2.7-liter turbocharged I-4 L3B TurboMax as the sole powertrain option. While fewer choices may seem limiting, this change actually enhances the truck’s performance and simplifies the buying experience. The move applies to both the WT and LT trims, giving fleet buyers and enthusiasts a consistent, powerful option.

TurboMax Takes the Spotlight
The L3B TurboMax engine delivers 310 horsepower and up to 430 lb-ft of torque, making it the most capable Colorado engine ever offered. Previously, lower-output engines like the L2R Turbo offered 237 hp and 259 lb-ft, but now buyers get the upgraded performance as standard. This ensures a more robust towing and payload experience across the lineup.

Towing and Payload Improvements
With the weaker L2R engine gone, payload and towing capacities are significantly enhanced. The Colorado now offers up to 1,710 pounds of payload and 7,700 pounds of towing with the Advanced Trailering package. Comparatively, the outgoing L2R model managed just 1,490 pounds payload and 3,500 pounds towing, making this a major step forward for work and adventure capabilities.

Streamlined Choices for Buyers
Chevrolet’s decision also simplifies the customer experience. By offering a single, high-output engine across trims, buyers no longer need to navigate multiple powertrain options. This reduces complexity while providing a clear, powerful choice, keeping the Colorado competitive in the midsize pickup segment.

Why It Matters
The 2025 Colorado demonstrates that less can be more. By focusing on the most capable turbocharged engine, Chevrolet enhances performance, consistency, and appeal for buyers. For anyone seeking a midsize truck with serious towing and payload, the TurboMax-powered Colorado delivers a practical and powerful solution.
