2022 Ford Expedition: A Versatile Family Hauler with Style and Tech Upgrades
The 2022 Ford Expedition and Expedition Max are back with revamped exteriors, interiors, and a suite of new features and options. Ford’s biggest SUVs are versatile, family-friendly haulers with three rows of seats, impressive towing capacity, and off-road capability.
Sure, the Expedition isn’t as nimble and maneuverable as some competitors. Still, it has one of the roomiest and most comfortable cabins in its class, paired with a new 15.5-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen and hands-free driving modes.
So, the question is should you buy it? Well, only after you read our review of the 2022 Ford Expedition.
How Does It Perform?
Under the hood of the 2022 Ford Expedition and Expedition Max packs a powerful twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 engine paired with a responsive 10-speed automatic transmission.
The standard engine produces 380 HP and 470 lb/ft of torque, but on the Limited models, it gets a boost to 400 HP and 480 lb/ft of torque.
Anyone looking for even more power will find the Timberline trim, and Limited with the Stealth Performance package offers a higher power output at 440 horsepower and 510 lb/ft of torque.
One of the first things that impressed us was the Timberline model’s acceleration, which bolted from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds, beating the competing V-8–powered Tahoe Z71 by 2.4 seconds.
The Stealth Performance model takes things to the next level, shaving off an additional 0.2 seconds from the Timberline’s time. In addition to power output, the Expedition has an impressive towing capacity of up to 9300 lbs, with the Expedition Max still pulling impressive 9000 pounds.
Cabin Comfort and Features
One of the first things we noticed is that the Expedition’s interior offers comfort and luxury with generous use of premium materials. The cabin materials and trim pieces become more impressive as you move up the trim levels, with the Platinum trim offering rich leather upholstery and front seats that can massage your back.
The regular Expedition and Expedition Max have spacious interiors, with the third row surprisingly large enough to accommodate adults. The second row features a standard three-seat bench, but the option for captain’s chairs is available for those who prefer it.
We also love the unbeatable Expedition Max’s interior cubby storage, with plenty of space for storing small items. Every model also comes with a power-folding third row that can be controlled from the cargo area or back seats, making it easy to adapt to your storage needs. The second and third rows can be folded completely flat to create a level floor, perfect for hauling larger items.
Drawing from my experience, the Expedition’s infotainment system stands out with its standard 12.0-inch touchscreen that runs on Ford’s Sync4 software. The system can accept over-the-air updates and features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with seamless smartphone integration.
Additionally, an optional subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot is perfect for staying connected on long journeys. The Expedition’s entertainment options are plentiful, with the option of a 22-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo and a rear-seat entertainment system. If the 12.0-inch touchscreen isn’t enough, buyers can get it equipped with a larger, 15.5-inch vertically oriented touchscreen with Ford’s battery-electric Mustang Mach-E.
Final Word
The 2022 Ford Expedition is the perfect family hauler for most Americans. It is worth considering for anyone looking for a well-built, spacious daily driver.
