Diesel pick-up for under €20,000: the Peugeot Landtrek 2026 challenges Santana and Toyota

By  |

The surprise does not come from Asia or Spain, but from France: Peugeot has one of the most competitive pick-ups on the market in terms of price, capability and technology.

The Peugeot Landtrek 2026 is a familiar name, but it now returns with a refreshed front end and even stronger credentials. Available with single or double cab, this pick-up positions itself as a vehicle equally suited to daily work duties and weekend leisure use. In terms of concept, performance and pricing, it could become a direct rival to the new Santana 400, the Toyota Hilux 2026 and even the Ford Ranger, without overlooking strong Chinese alternatives such as the Maxus T60 MAX or the Foton Tunland.

A true workhorse… and a leisure companion

The French pick-up is offered with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive with low-range gearbox, and with Professional, Active, Allure and 4Action trim levels. Regardless of the version, payload capacity exceeds one tonne and towing capacity reaches up to 3,000 kg, figures that place it squarely among the most capable models in its class. The 4×4 versions feature an automatic rear locking differential, known as eLocker, which improves traction when a wheel loses grip or even lifts off the ground technology typically associated with serious off-road vehicles.

In terms of size and off-road geometry, the Landtrek plays in the top league. It measures 5.33 metres in length, offers a 29° approach angle, a 27° departure angle, 60 cm wading depth, and ground clearance of up to 23.5 cm depending on tyre choice. It comes fitted with Goodyear Wrangler All Terrain Adventure (M+S) tyres, designed to perform across all types of terrain, from asphalt to mud and rough tracks.

Under the bonnet sits a 1.9-litre diesel engine producing 150 hp and 350 Nm, featuring a variable-geometry turbocharger, 16 valves and a timing chain, a solution aimed at reducing long-term maintenance costs. This engine can be paired with either a manual or automatic gearbox and offers Eco, Normal and Sport driving modes, an uncommon feature in pick-ups at this price point.

In terms of technology and equipment, the Landtrek is far from basic. It includes hill descent control, lane departure warning and tyre pressure monitoring, along with a wide range of available accessories such as side steps, hard bed covers, chrome roll bars and alarms. All of this reinforces its dual professional and recreational character.

However, the figure that truly changes the game is the price. While the Santana 400 starts at ‚¬29,990 before taxes, the Peugeot Landtrek 2026 is offered from just ‚¬19,780 in international markets, and the most affordable 4×4 version stays below ‚¬28,000 at current exchange rates. With these numbers, capabilities and brand backing, the key question is obvious: if it were launched in Spain, could it become one of the market’s most successful diesel pick-ups?
