TEST DRIVES

2020 Hyundai Veloster Turbo Ultimate

By  |

The 2020 Hyundai Veloster Turbo Ultimate stands out in multiple departments such as competitive pricing and, most notably, its three-door body. In addition to having two doors in the front, this rather aggressive-looking hatchback has a large one on the rear over on the passenger side. If anything, this style has its own fan following mainly because it simplifies getting in and out of the back seat.

During our test drive (details below), we found that the 2020 Hyundai Veloster delivers excellent performance, over a comfortable suspension that’s remarkable around bends. The turbo is one of the best we’ve tested so far, delivering power at the flick of a switch. However, there is more to the latest Veloster than just power!

Luxurious Cabin for a Sport Compact

One of the things we instantly noticed about the 2020 Hyundai Veloster is its luxurious cabin. The excellent craftsmanship in the cabin is immediately apparent because it isn’t something you expect in a sports compact.

The materials used are arguably amongst the best we’ve seen in this class of vehicle. Sure, there are a few hard plastics, but thankfully not a lot. The one long door in the back does, in fact, make it easy to enter and exit the vehicle, and with 20 cubic feet of space in the boot, you could take it for a weekend trip. However, more space can be made by folding the seats in the back, which extends the boot to 44.5 cubic feet. Putting things in perspective, compared to competing hatches, the Veloster provides more than enough space.

A Beast on the Road

We tested the 201 HP, 1.6L Turbo GDI, with 195lbs-ft of torque, aka the Turbo Ultimate for this review. Right off the bat, we could tell that the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission was zippy, and it was as if pushing us to give it more power.

The Ultimate we tested went from 0-60 mph in just 6 seconds, which is very fast for a vehicle in this class, especially when compared to the Civic hatchback, which we timed at 7 seconds. When buying the 2020 Hyundai Veloster, we strongly suggest going for the Turbo engine not only because it is fun to drive but because, in our experience, it also offered superior handling.

Driving dynamics is very driver-friendly, and we were able to take the vehicle around bends at relative ease at high speeds. However, what put a smile on our face was the 30 mpg, mixed fuel average, with 28 mpg for city and 34 mpg for highway driving. To us, those are excellent figures for a vehicle that’s maybe a slight performance step behind a supercar!

Final Verdict

The 2020 Hyundai Veloster Turbo Ultimate is part of a generation that was originally launched in 2019. However, numerous improvements, as cited above to the 2020 model, make it well worth the starting price. In our opinion, it offers the best value for money compared to the competition, i.e., the Volkswagen GTI and Honda Civic. That’s why we have no problem recommending the 2020 model to anyone who can live with a 3-door oddball!
